Another season at the Morrisburg and District Curling Club is underway this week. President Joe McCooeye tells us that there are still a few openings for men’s Tuesday night curling and the Friday night mixed league. He can be reached at 543-0327. For curling in the Tuesday afternoon women’s daytime league, contact Alice Thompson at 543-3134. For the women’s Wednesday night curling, you can reach Wendy Casselman at 535-2096. A reminder that if you have paid for a full membership, you are entitled to unlimited curling. Feel free to sign up for any leagues that interest you, or if leagues are full, let the coordinator know you are available as a spare. Non-members pay $10 per game.
Joe also thanks members who worked over the summer to prepare the Club for the new season. New windows have been installed in the lounge, John Toonders did a fine landscaping job at the front entrance, and Jack Barkley and Doug Jarvis have worked hard on the lounge interior. Jack Dikland and Bill Magee have our third camera and monitor, sponsored by Brister Insurance, up and running, and numerous other members have been active this summer as also. Our thanks to all volunteers.
The opening event each fall is our Swing and Sweep extravaganza, ably organized by Mahlon Locke and his hard-working committee members. On Saturday, 14 teams curled six ends and most of them played nine holes of golf at the Morrisburg club. Besides our local athletes, teams from the surrounding area, Winchester, Ottawa, and Toronto competed. After a fine chili lunch at the curling club and a delicious banquet at the golf club, the prizes were awarded.
Overall winners were Bobby Jack Hart, Bob Bergland, Mike Perry and Dorothy Culkin, while Gary and Leanne Monroe, John Phillips, and Cheryl Lowe were second. The top curlers were Steve and Alice Thompson, Bob Fortin and Greta McGann, with the best golfers Sid Morrell, Don O’Brien, Neil Williams and Ray Benoit. Other prize winners were Debbie Strader, Jim Casselman, Ken Dujay, Joanne Baker, Carolyn Beckstead, Larry Cooper, Donnie Cox, Leanne McCooeye and Kristine. In spite of the exciting beginning to the season, a wish for a more pleasant, drier event next year was on most people’s minds they braved the rain, dashing to their cars.
In closing, we are in the process of updated our website, complete with curling game, details of upcoming bonspiels, names of executive members, contact numbers, and so on. For our new sponsors, we apologize for neglecting you on our rolling list on the website. We should have it revised soon. In the meantime, thanks to all who support the club by purchasing advertising boards at the club and we encourage all to patronize your establishments.
Finally, remember to give club news to Steve Thompson for inclusion in this column.
Good curling to all!
